After the diagnosis, Mr. Church discovered that his neighbor worked for Dr. Michael C. Solomon, a local urologist. He told his neighbor about his prostate cancer. He also explained he was unemployed and had no insurance. The neighbor talked to Dr. Solomon who agreed to meet with Mr. Church.
Dr. Solomon performed a complete exam and ran several tests. He discovered that the PSA level was increasing and the cancer was growing. He knew something had to be done immediately – with or without insurance. Mr. Church started receiving injections and began hormone therapy replacement, which was supposed to reduce the PSA levels. It was not effective.
Dr. Solomon made arrangements with his team at the Blue Water Surgery Center to accept Mr. Church as a patient. They scheduled surgery where Dr. Solomon performed a procedure called seeding. Seeding occurs when you insert radiation pellets directly into the prostate to offset the cancer. This procedure worked and Mr. Church’s PSA levels dropped to .4.
“I don’t know if I would be here today, if it were not for Dr. Solomon and his team,” said Church. “He knew I was out of work and didn’t have insurance, but he treated me as though I did. He saved my life. I’m eternally grateful for everything they did.”
“There were several unique factors involving Mr. Church,” stated Dr. Solomon. “He was seeing a doctor, was diagnosed by that doctor, but because he did not have insurance was turned away. He needed immediate help, so we stepped in and did what we needed to do.”
